For the month of June, I have some fun personal finance comparisons coming! Today’s post compares personal finance with chewing gum. Read on to be enlightened – and never think of chewing gum the same again!
🎯Sometimes you find yourself in sticky situations. Just like you never see it coming when gum gets stuck in your hair (you would totally avoid that!!), you may also never see a blow to your finances coming (because you would totally prepare for that, too!!). If you don’t have your savings account with the standard 3-6 months of expenses funded, that should be a priority. This will help you weather many future sticky situations you may not see coming.
🎯The novelty, excitement, and flavor when it’s new can wear off. The flavor of gum is super new and fresh when you first start chewing it, but after a while, it loses its flavor. You may be super motivated with strong desire at the beginning of getting your personal finances in order, but that novelty can wear off. What do you want your future to look like? Keep that in mind. Write down your goals. Create a vision board if you want. But keep that picture in front of you. This can be your motivation.
🎯There’s no one right flavor for everybody. But everybody has a favorite. There’s no one right way to do your personal finances, but everybody has a favorite way. It could be an app that links to your bank account. It could be an Excel sheet. Perhaps you prefer the cash/envelope system. Or good ol’ pen and paper. It could be any combination of the above. It could be something that you thought of on your own. Some trial and error could happen, but you will find what works for your and your lifestyle.
🎯Sometimes your bubble can burst. Life can throw us curveballs. But sometimes, the next bubble is even better than the first one!
🎯Sometimes friends and family ask you for a piece of your gum. It’s up to you whether you share. Think wisely before you loan out what is yours – or give someone advice…
🎯…Because they may not like the flavor. Just because something works for you, doesn’t mean it’s automatically right for another.
In Conclusion…
I hope the next time you are chewing your gum, you will think about your money and all the ways the two are similar.
